Role summary
We're hiring an Engagement Manager to lead paid advertising campaigns designed to recruit talent into high-impact programs, reach small groups of people crucial to our clients' theory of change, and more.
No marketing experience required.
Who is Good Impressions?
We're a nonprofit startup creating the engagement needed to solve the world's most critical problems.
As part of our Growth & Advocacy Program, we've signed up more than 1,200 health workers in Nigeria for a course on life-saving newborn care skills; recruited hundreds of people from frontier AI companies, FAANG, and top research organizations to join AI safety courses; and increased the adoption of technology that makes it harder to order pathogens from DNA synthesis companies.
We're a small, talent-dense, fully remote team funded by Coefficient Giving, Longview Philanthropy, and client fees.
Why this role matters
The world's most effective organizations pour millions of dollars and years of team time into work that could make real progress on solving some of the world's most pressing problems. Too often, that work never reaches the people who could act on it.
Closing that gap is one of the highest-leverage, most tractable problems to work on.
We have the track record, skills, and connections to do this work, but we have more ideas and demand than we have capacity.
What you'll do
Lead campaigns end to end
- Meet with clients to thoroughly understand their goals, constraints, and the broader context of their work
- Set the campaign strategy (audiences, messaging, and channel mix), working with our Campaign Manager, and specialists in design and analytics
- Own the creative and messaging, and partner with our Campaign Manager to launch and run campaigns across platforms
- Execute complex, multi-stakeholder projects while maintaining momentum and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks
- Partner with the Campaign Manager to monitor performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and iterate quickly
- Analyze and communicate results and recommended next steps so clients stay in the loop throughout, being completely objective and never over-attributing our impact
Be a strong partner to clients
- Build strong relationships with clients: we succeed when they succeed
- Communicate clearly, proactively, and with reasoning transparency
- Stay responsive while managing multiple concurrent projects
Shape the field
- Use your knowledge of the effective altruism landscape to identify critical communication gaps Good Impressions should address
- Stay current with the priorities and debates across the causes we serve
- Share your knowledge and communications expertise with other organizations to strengthen the field's overall communication capacity
Help us scale
- Build, automate, and document processes, and pilot new offerings
- Continually experiment with AI tools to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your work
You'll report to our Head of Growth & Advocacy, Diane Doran, and work as part of a small team that supports campaigns across our cause areas.
About you
We are especially excited about people who have strong private sector professional services experience and are highly motivated to do impactful work. We will evaluate candidates across five areas:
- Professional services experience. A successful track record in a high-expectation professional services environment such as management consulting, and at least 5 years of professional work experience. You demonstrate the proactive communication, organization, strong decision-making, and rigor required to build strong client relationships.
- Effective altruism engagement. You're active in the effective altruism community and want to do high-impact work. That can look like many things: attending EAGs, volunteering with EA organizations, engaging seriously with EA ideas, or steering your career toward impact. You may be new to EA, but if so you're motivated enough to have learned the ecosystem.
- Values alignment. You feel deep alignment with our values (below).
- Will. You care deeply about doing high-impact work and see communications as an important part of achieving it. You're highly motivated to join our team.
- [Bonus] Marketing or communications experience. This role doesn't require prior experience in digital marketing or communications; the work is very learnable and we'll teach you. If you do have experience in this area, we'll value it highly.
We're not expecting candidates to satisfy each of these perfectly. If most of this sounds like you, we want to hear from you.
What we offer
- Impact: Our projects often have an outsized impact for the organizations we support, from enabling more fundraising to contributing to long-term strategy.
- A seat at the center of high-impact communications: We work with many of the most prominent organizations across effective altruism's cause areas.
- A team people love: "The productivity and kindness of this team are off the charts." "I honestly cannot imagine working in a more positive culture." "This is the first time in eight years I can confidently say I'm happy at work."
- Autonomy: You'll manage and drive projects to completion yourself.
- Salary: $80,000–$120,000 USD annually, based on experience and location.
- Benefits: Premium health coverage and regular team retreats.
- Fully remote: Flexible working hours and open to candidates globally between California and UK time zones.
Our values
We hire, give feedback, and, if necessary, fire based on these values. Please consider them carefully before applying.
- Impact first. Impact is our north star. We turn down projects when we don't think we can help, and we initiate important projects nobody is asking for.
- Own the mission. We take complete ownership of outcomes and push through obstacles until we deliver results we're proud of.
- Look for better and faster ways of doing everything. We search for approaches that are orders of magnitude better than the standard way, and we leverage AI to work smarter and faster.
- Be radically helpful. To our clients, because they're doing some of the most impactful work in the world. To each other, because we succeed or fail as a team.
- Overcommunicate. Most problems can be solved or avoided with more frequent and effective communication. We say what we think, even when others may disagree.
- Constantly improve. We're hungry for impact, which means we're hungry for feedback. We seek it out and see it as a sign of respect.
What to expect when you apply
We assess applications on a rolling basis until the role is filled, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. We respond to every application.
- Intro call: 25 minutes to learn more about you
- Assignment: a hands-on, paid work sample, on a timeline you choose
- Deeper interview: a 90-minute resume review with two members of our team
- Paid work trial (if needed): a multi-day paid trial working with us on real projects
- Reference checks and offer
Our goal is to extend an offer before the end of September, but we'll keep the role open as long as it takes to find the right fit.
