Role summary

We're hiring an Engagement Manager who deeply understands the AI risk landscape to lead paid advertising campaigns designed to educate key decision makers on important issues, recruit participants for programs, and more.

Many of these projects have the potential to be impactful even under very short AGI timelines.

No marketing experience required.

Who is Good Impressions?

We're a nonprofit startup creating the engagement needed to solve the world's most critical problems.

As part of our Growth & Advocacy Program, we've run campaigns that tripled a leading AI research organization's audience among people at top labs and governments, recruited staff from OpenAI, Meta, and the WHO into AI safety courses, and increased the adoption of technology making it harder to order pathogens from DNA synthesis companies.

We're a small, talent-dense, fully remote team funded by Coefficient Giving, Longview Philanthropy, and client fees.

Why this role matters

AI capabilities are advancing faster than the world is prepared for. Many researchers believe transformative, potentially dangerous AI could arrive within years, not decades.

Communication is one of the last levers left in short-timeline scenarios. The right message, in front of the right people, can change a decision in weeks. There is even more opportunity for impact over longer timelines.

We have the track record, skills, and connections needed to do this work but we need the right person to own it.

What you'll do

Lead campaigns end to end

  • Meet with clients to thoroughly understand their goals, constraints, and the broader context of their work in the AI safety ecosystem
  • Set the campaign strategy (audiences, messaging, and channel mix), working with our Campaign Manager and specialists in design and analytics
  • Own the creative and messaging, and partner with our Campaign Manager to launch and run campaigns across platforms
  • Execute complex, multi-stakeholder projects while maintaining momentum and ensuring nothing falls through the cracks
  • Partner with the Campaign Manager to monitor performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and iterate quickly
  • Analyze and communicate results and recommended next steps, keeping clients in the loop throughout while never over-attributing our impact

Be a strong partner to clients

  • Build strong relationships with clients: we succeed when they succeed
  • Communicate clearly, proactively, and with reasoning transparency
  • Stay responsive while managing multiple concurrent projects

Shape the field

  • Use your knowledge of the AI safety landscape to identify critical communication gaps Good Impressions should address
  • Stay current with AI capabilities, risks, policy developments, and public narratives
  • Share your AI safety knowledge and communications expertise with other organizations to strengthen the field's overall communication capacity

Help us scale

  • Build, automate, and document processes, and pilot new offerings
  • Continually experiment with AI tools to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your work
  • Occasionally take on projects in other cause areas (farmed animal welfare, global health, EA community development) when a need arises that we're best placed to fill

You'll report to our Head of Growth & Advocacy, Diane Doran, and work as part of a small team that supports campaigns across our cause areas.

About you

We are especially excited about people who have strong private sector professional services experience and are highly engaged in AI safety. We will evaluate candidates across five areas:

  1. AI risk competency. You're embedded in and trusted by the AI safety community. You know the concepts, key players, and ongoing debates, you stay current on AI developments and policy, and you have burning ideas about the campaigns that would move the space forward. You can navigate Bay Area rationalist culture.
  2. Professional services experience. A successful track record in a high-expectation professional services environment such as management consulting, and at least 5 years of professional work experience. You demonstrate the proactive communication, organization, strong decision-making, and rigor required to build strong client relationships.
  3. Values alignment. You feel deep alignment with our values (below).
  4. Will. You care deeply about reducing AI risk and see communications as an important part of doing so. You're highly motivated to join our team.
  5. [Bonus] Marketing or communications experience. This role doesn't require prior experience in digital marketing or communications; the work is very learnable and we'll teach you. If you do have experience in this area, we'll value it highly.

We're not expecting candidates to satisfy each of these perfectly. If most of this sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

What we offer

  • Impact: Some of the projects we run have a chance of changing the trajectory of AI's impact on the world.
  • A seat at the center of AI risk communications: We work with many of the most prominent organizations in AI safety.
  • A team people love: "The productivity and kindness of this team are off the charts." "I honestly cannot imagine working in a more positive culture." "This is the first time in eight years I can confidently say I'm happy at work."
  • Autonomy: You'll manage and drive projects to completion yourself.
  • Salary: $80,000–$160,000 USD annually, based on experience and location. $80,000–$120,000 starting range, with potential to extend up to $160,000 USD for candidates in the Bay Area who are embedded in the AI safety community.
  • Benefits: Premium health coverage, one of the highest plan tiers available in your country, and regular team retreats
  • Fully remote: Flexible working hours and open to candidates globally between California and UK time zones.

Our values

We hire, give feedback, and, if necessary, fire based on these values. Please consider them carefully before applying.

  1. Impact first. Impact is our north star. We turn down projects when we don't think we can help, and we initiate important projects nobody is asking for.
  2. Own the mission. We take complete ownership of outcomes and push through obstacles until we deliver results we're proud of.
  3. Look for better and faster ways of doing everything. We search for approaches that are orders of magnitude better than the standard way, and we leverage AI to work smarter and faster.
  4. Be radically helpful. To our clients, because they're doing some of the most impactful work in the world. To each other, because we succeed or fail as a team.
  5. Overcommunicate. Most problems can be solved or avoided with more frequent and effective communication. We say what we think, even when others may disagree.
  6. Constantly improve. We're hungry for impact, which means we're hungry for feedback. We seek it out and see it as a sign of respect.
